DUMPSTERS TO MANAGE YOUR WASTE ECOLOGICALLY!

DUMPSTERS TO MANAGE YOUR WASTE ECOLOGICALLY!

MANAGE YOUR WASTE ECOLOGICALLY

When it comes to environmental consciousness, today’s society has evolved tremendously. There was a time not so long ago when waste materials and trash was unceremoniously dumped in landfills in a totally disorganized manner. Few questioned the pertinence of sorting the materials, or worrying about might be done with them? It was socially acceptable to dump everything, and no one wondered much about what was going to happen to the waste from renovation, construction and demolitions sites.

TODAY’S SOCIETY HAS A MUCH GREENER CONSCIENCE, AND SO DO WE!

According to Recyc-Québec, data from 2008 showed an increase of 11% in the recovery of materials in the construction sector from 2006. Over a period of 10 years, from 1998 to 2008, the quantity of recovered and recycled materials nearly tripled. Today, the majority of our customers are concerned about what happens to their waste once we have taken charge of it in our dumpsters. We are proud to be contributing to the greening of today’s world. We can affirm that we are now recycling up to 95% of the waste we collect and deliver to the waste transfer centre run by our partner EBI (Recyclage Notre-Dame). Sorting waste requires solid infrastructure and the expertise to be able to ensure optimal recycling, which EBI accomplishes with brio. But the work also requires the collaboration of our customers!

WASTE AS VALUE: A NEW ENVIRONMENTAL ATTITUDE

Without going too much into detail, it’s good to understand the notions behind the 3RV concept (Reducing, Recycling, Reusing and Valuing). Typically, the majority of waste is recycled, meaning it is transformed into the basic components of another fabrication process. For example, concrete and asphalt is reduced to granular form so it can be reused as new concrete or new asphalt. Recycling is the most common activity in the waste management value chain. The challenge lies in reusing the waste, which requires properly structured planning and organization. This stage consists of taking certain waste materials and reusing them in their entirety, or with slight modifications. For example, we might imagine that stainless steel washbasins could be recovered, reconditioned and resold. But it is rare that this stage of the recycling process proves sufficiently profitable, which is why recycling plants don’t really do it. Nor are materials like tyres revalued by transforming them into rubber mats. However, all these materials can be recycled:
  • Treated and untreated wood
  • Rock, concrete and brick
  • Gypsum
  • PVC
  • Ceramics/Porcelain
  • Compostable waste (earth, branches, leaves, etc.)
As to the first stage, which is the reduction of waste, this challenge belongs to you since it involves actually reducing the quantity of waste in the first place. Finally, after all these stages, whatever cannot be recycled is sent to a landfill or incinerated. And there are some interesting initiatives coming forward that may lead to sources of renewable energy being created long term, such as biogas. In fact, the future seems promising in this direction with the Biogas Program that the Ministère du Développement durable, Environnement et Lutte Contre les Changements Climatiques has been operating for some years requiring landfills to recover the biogas over and above a certain threshold of greenhouse gas emissions.

WHAT IS REQUIRED IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE OPTIMAL RECYCLING

And now you can play your part. When your dumpster is delivered to the collection point, the first step is up to you. With respect to the waste you will produce, there is a certain logical order and criteria to be respected. Obviously, the heaviest articles should go into the bottom of the dumpster to facilitate transportation and keep the load balanced. Materials with the largest metric volume should also go in the bottom, so you can optimize the space used. For the rest, you should avoid adding any waste that will be refused by the recycling centre, such as car tyres, with or without rims, propane cylinders and electronic equipment. All of these items are subject to specialized recycling. You will find most of the answers to these and other questions in our FAQ. Don’t forget that we take the type of waste you are producing into account, since there are additional fees for excess weight and materials that do not comply with recycling rules or whose recycling is regulated (tyre tax for recovering tyres, rules for recycling asbestos, others for electronic equipment).

We are proud to participate along with you in this environmental consciousness so that we may do everything in our power to make life easier when it comes to managing your waste.

RECYCLING GUIDE FOR MINI-DUMPSTERS AND DUMPSTERS

RECYCLING GUIDE FOR MINI-DUMPSTERS AND DUMPSTERS

MINI-DUMPSTERS

Tri-O-Bac is firmly committed to improving our already high recycling standards. This guide is designed to help you understand the stages involved in the sorting of your waste, once the dumpster has been picked up and is in our charge. In fact, the real work begins once the dumpster arrives at our recycling centre. Tri-O-Bac has to carry out an initial sort to ensure that recycling is the best solution for the various materials.
  • We first select the most common and numerous waste materials such as plasterboard, concrete, wood, branches, rocks, etc. This initial sort means we can ensure we receive priority treatment at our partner’s waste processing centre.
  • The second stage consists of disposing of any hazardous domestic waste (HDW), making sure that you have not put any into the dumpster by mistake. Should it prove to be the case, there will be an additional charge, since we have to pay to have it disposed of ecologically.
  • The last stage consists of transferring the dumpster content after the first sort so that the final phase can be carried out according to recognized environmental standards. Thus will the majority of the waste be processed for recycling, or sent to a landfill to become biogas.

HOW TO READ THE RECYCLING GUIDE?

In this non-exhaustive list, we have covered most of what is likely to be found in your rented dumpster. If you are reading this, you are obviously concerned about the ways in which your waste is being ecologically processed. So it is important to understand that Tri-O-Bac does the first sort of recyclable materials. All materials that fall under Écocentre criteria are processed in the same way at the industrial level at EBI’s waste processing plant. Green waste is processed as compost, while any actual garbage is sent to a landfill. So when you send your dumpster through the Tri-O-Bac system, you can be assured that we always consider the best manner in which to dispose of your waste ecologically.

HOWEVER, WE DO NEED YOUR HELP IN ORDER TO AVOID UNNECESSARY ADDITIONAL MANIPULATION.

All items in red are ones that should not be put in your dumpster, since they may be subject to fines or simply be a danger for environment. For example, let’s say you are disposing of your used oil in the dumpster; we will probably be unable to cope with this dangerous waste material. That’s why we ask you to be vigilant in order to help us in our fight against greenhouse gas emissions. Your vigilance combined with our commitment will increase our collective environmental performance.

Do you have any questions? We are here to help you see things in a greener light!

5 TIPS FOR RENTING A WASTE CONTAINER (DUMPSTER)

5 TIPS FOR RENTING A WASTE CONTAINER (DUMPSTER)

5 conseils pratiques

If you are not an industrial, commercial or construction and renovation company, it is likely that you have never rented waste containers (dumpsters), and perhaps you will do it only once in your life time. This post has been thought of for people like you who say, ”but what should I know before renting a dumpster?”. Let’s go with some tips that we hope will greatly help you make a better choice. We all know that waste management has become a real headache and must be planned as an expenditure in all our renovation or construction work, big or small.

TIP 1: CHOOSE THE RIGHT SIZE

All customers are asking outright, but how big should the container be? This question is more than relevant, that is why we have created a simple equivalence table to help you in your calculations. We have chosen green bins and a trailer to illustrate the equivalence because they are easy to compare by the vast majority. It is also here that we introduce the concept of the mini-container since you have to know that there are a multitude of container sizes, commonly measured in cubic yards. The smallest size is 10 cubic yards and fits in a garage, driveway or alley. You do not want too big a container if you want be able to place it anywhere on your property. You just need the right size to avoid the need to rent a second dumpster while in the middle of your renovations. So planning is required. According to the number and types of rooms you are remodeling (bathroom or kitchen creates more bulky waste) you can easily estimate the ideal container size. To help, see our chart here.

Remember that the weight also has a great influence, as well as the volume of your waste. A shower unit is not heavy but bulky. There must be some managing of your container space to maximize its use. Also, if you need to add rocks, bricks or heavy material, mention it while you are making your reservation, you may have to restrict the volume if the weight is too heavy to meet the permitted load limits.

TIP 2: PLANNING WHAT YOU CAN PUT INTO YOUR CONTAINER

As mentioned previously, there is a marked difference between the materials you are going to throw in your container. The type of waste and its content are to be considered. For example, gravel cannot be mixed with other materials. Some wastes are banned outright, the detailed list is explained in the recycling guide that we have prepared for you. We must not forget that the rental dumpster company is responsible for managing the content of the waste. It is subject to the laws and regulations related to waste management and the rental company assumes full legal and moral responsibility as well.

At Tri-O-Bac we have also taken the environmental route for some time, and we are proud to recycle our waste to the maximum possible. Ignoring the basic rules may cause extra expenses when toxic waste, or any other exceptions are treated. Hence the importance of planning the type of waste to dispose. To do this, try to make the list of wastes by determining each step of your anticipated work. Remember that municipalities have several services to help you deal with prohibited waste to be disposed ecologically.

TIP 3: DETERMINE THE RENTAL PERIOD REQUIRED

Another consideration is certainly the duration of the rental that must be estimated. It not only affects the price, but also your permit application (see Tip 4). From experience, it is preferable to keep the container as long as you have work in progress, as is often at the end of the work that the final amount of waste is really known. Do not be caught off guard and plan some scheduled time extensions.

Another consideration to take into account is the difficulty to install a container in a public space. If you live in a dense urban environment, you might be tempted to use an express service that lets you rent a container for approximately two hours. This service allows you to place a container in your lane, or elsewhere, the time to complete waste loading. To optimize such a solution, you should find a space to store the waste in anticipation of the service.

In any case, do not underestimate the time, because going back and forth with the containers have a cost.

TIP 4: VALIDATE THE REGULATIONS IN YOUR MUNICIPALITY

Another consideration is certainly the duration of the rental that must be estimated. It not only affects the price, but also your permit application (see Tip 4). From experience, it is preferable to keep the container as long as you have work in progress, as is often at the end of the work that the final amount of waste is really known. Do not be caught off guard and plan some scheduled time extensions.

TIP 5: GOOD PLANNING ENSURES THE BEST SAVINGS

In the end, it seems clear that proper planning will ensure you the best quality-price for your rental. You can also combine services with the ecocentres in your municipality to optimize your waste management. You can also benefit by optimizing the use of your waste volume by discarding them wisely. The use of cardboard boxes could also be useful to hold similar debris more easily, both in volume and weight. Remember that the waste containers are large open bins. There is no magic, as we say, “Garbage in, garbage out! “. An expression that makes sense knowing that your waste will be treated at the end of the chain and end up in the right place if we have a place for authorized waste. Hence the importance of choosing a container company environmentally responsible.

Now you are ready to rent a container, make your choice!

WHAT PROCEDURES DO YOU HAVE TO FOLLOW TO INSTALL A DUMPSTER IN A PUBLIC SPACE?

WHAT PROCEDURES DO YOU HAVE TO FOLLOW TO INSTALL A DUMPSTER IN A PUBLIC SPACE?

Container rules

All municipalities have their own procedures and regulations concerning deployment of dumpsters. However, regulations have been harmonized within most of the Greater Montreal region, including the Communauté Urbaine de Montréal and municipalities on the North and South Shores. The same rule therefore applies everywhere: a container installed in a public space requires a public domain occupancy permit. Tri-O-Bac is well aware that no container can be left in a restricted area without obtaining prior permission. Whether on a footpath or a public roadway, any obstruction of the public domain, even temporary, is forbidden. We have gathered a detailed list of direct links to find out about your municipality.

We present these few tips as a means of helping you avoid any nasty surprises, as well as accelerating the permit application process. If the process seems to complicated or troublesome, you may be able to opt for an express pick-up in under two hours, our unique service for mini-dumpster rentals. Tri-O-Bac has considerable expertise when it comes to renting dumpsters in an urban setting or limited space.

  • As a property owner or lessee, you’ll need to supply your exact contact details. If you are an entrepreneur, make sure you have your contact details and your building contractor’s licence in hand.
  • You will also need to define the location I which you intend to place the dumpster, very precisely. You need to allow for sufficient space so that no entrances to alleyways or parking spaces are blocked, nor are you causing any other obstructions. It’s important to make sure the space in which you want the dumpster placed is free and that enough room is available for the truck to manoeuvre. So a careful study of the zone you intend to occupy is a good idea.
  • If there is no choice and you are forced to block an alleyway, some parking meters, a parking lot or a pay station, make sure you describe the situation precisely when applying for your permit.
  • You must supply the exact dates for delivery and pick-up in order to determine the length of the permit.
  • And obviously, you must know the exact dimensions of your Tri-O-Bac dumpster.

FOLLOW THESE STEPS TO OBTAIN A PUBLIC DOMAIN
OCCUPANCY PERMIT

Are you ready to put in your request? Be aware that it generally requires a minimum of two days to get a permit. However, you should be careful because not all municipalities have the resources to be able to respond to your request in time, particularly in the busy season. Minimum processing times may also vary from one municipality to another.
Here are the procedures to follow for arrondissements in the City of Montréal (for adjacent municipalities, refer to this list)
  • Fill out the form: Application for a permit to temporarily occupy public property*;
  • Return the form a minimum of two working days prior to the start of work by fax to 514 868-4688 or in person at the Permits Counter;
  • Ask to have the permit sent by fax or get it on site at the Permits Counter of your arrondissement or municipality;
  • Don’t forget to display your permit clearly on the container. Tri-O-Bac is not responsible for the permit, you are.
  • Please note that you must notify about any modification or rental cancellation for the dumpster, by fax at 514 868-4688, at the latest by 9 a.m. on the morning work is to start, so that any adjustment to the cost may be made.

HOW MUCH DOES A PUBLIC DOMAIN OCCUPANCY
PERMIT COST?

Since permit cost is directly proportional to the number of days of occupancy, it is important to plan the work carefully. Should you need help estimating the length of the rental, Tri-O-Bac can advise you.

Another important issue is the type of street involved. Major roads cost more than secondary routes, and if you are affecting a bus route or a cycle path, you may find the cost exorbitant. That’s why it’s important to find a strategic location that obstructs the public domain as little as possible. In short, the more you obstruct daily activities with your work, the more you can expect to pay.

The arrondissements or municipalities are generally not prepared to supply cost estimates. You can plan to pay between $75 and $135 per day for the largest dumpsters (20 cu. yds) [OH1] when obstructing the public domain very little (on a secondary route or laneway, for example), and between $400 and $800 for several days.

*It is also possible to obtain this form by fax by calling 514 868-4104 or you can get it from the Permits Counter in person.

To conclude, Tri-O-Bac can assist with this to some extent, but don’t forget it is your responsibility, and that the information above is subject to verification and confirmation with the local authorities concerned. We can only encourage you to put in your application as soon as possible, once you have reserved your dumpster or mini-dumpster. Don’t forget about our exclusive express pick-up service, which can help you avoid many a problem.
